  About this programme

  The Master of Education in English Language Education programme, a one-year full-time programme, is designed to empower students with the skills necessary to analyse advanced literature critically, identify research problems, develop methodologies, and reflect on the relevance of theory in practice.

  Students admitted to the full programme are required to successfully complete at least 30 credit units, including five core courses and one elective course, as detailed below:

  Professional recognition

  The Education Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government has approved the programme as a recognised English Language major degree. Graduates of the programme will satisfy the subject knowledge requirements stipulated by the Education Bureau and will be granted full exemption from the Language Proficiency Requirements (LPR) for English language teachers in Hong Kong, provided they have completed relevant teacher training.

  Admission requirements  

  To enter the programme, a student will need to:  

  i. possess a recognised Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent;  

  ii. fulfill the English language proficiency requirements; and

  Applicants whose Bachelor’s degrees or equivalent qualifications were obtained from programmes where the medium of instruction is not English must meet one of the following English language proficiency requirements, including:

  · an overall band score of at least 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Module, obtained in the same attempt within 2 years after the test date;

  · a minimum score of 550 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or 79 in the internet-based TOEFL, obtained in the same attempt within 2 years after the test date:

  · a minimum score of 500 in the College English Test Band 6 (CET-6); or

  · an equivalent score in a recognised test, to be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  iii. pass an admission interview

        

  Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview which assesses the applicants’ key competencies essential for effective communication and professional conduct in educational settings. The evaluation will focus on candidates’ knowledge and understanding of English language education, interactional skills, language proficiency, and personal attributes. Only those who demonstrate satisfactory performance will be admitted to the programme.

  Preference will be given to applicants with a strong and relevant academic background (e.g., a first-class or upper second-class honours degree), a recognised teaching qualification, and/or work experience in English language teaching.

  Full-time students are expected to complete the programme within one year (i.e., two terms).
